Biblical foundation for healing?

Posted on August 20, 2025 by Thomas CurrieSeptember 9, 2025
Beginning of divine healing

By studying salvation, you will find that belief in divine healing begins with our salvation through Jesus who redeemed us from the curse of sin:

  • (Romans 5:12) MEV: “Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, so death has spread to all men, because all have sinned.”
  • (Galatians 3:13-14): MEV. “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, by being made a curse for us, as it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree, so that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.””
  • (Deuteronomy 28:15-68): MEV. You will have to read these verses in the bible for yourself; they are warnings against disobedience to God and is sinning against God.

In the Hebrew language the word shalom means “completeness, wholeness, peace, health, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, absence of agitation or discord, to be complete, perfect and full.”

Covenant of salvation and peace

The peace of Jesus encompasses every area of life, including physical healing. We have received through Jesus, this covenant of salvation and peace that brings complete wholeness with “nothing missing, nothing broken.” Jesus took the punishment necessary to bring us this wholeness. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) MEV.

One of the most compelling arguments for divine healing is the fact that Jesus healed people throughout His earthly ministry. And according to the Bible, Jesus fulfilled the will of His Father when He healed people. “Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. (John 4:34) MEV, “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work You have given Me to do.” (John 17:4) MEV.

It should not be surprising that healing is God’s will when we notice God has always wanted His people well. He said, “If you diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will not afflict you with any of the diseases with which I have inflicted the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26) MEV.

Many signs and wonders were performed

Throughout the ministry of Jesus, you find that healing was a major component of His ministry. “When the evening came, they brought to him many who were possessed with demons. and He cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all who were sick, to fulfill what was spoken by Isaih the prophet, ‘He Himself took our infirmities, and bore our sicknesses.’” (Matthew 8:16-17) MEV.

The scripture makes it abundantly clear that the sicknesses and diseases Jesus healed were not only spiritual, but physical as well. Also, that physical healing was part of a true fulfilment of:

  • (Isaiah 53:5) MEV. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed.”
  • (Luke 4:18-19) MEV. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
  • (1 Peter 2:24). “He Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. By His wounds you were healed.”

When Jesus sent out His disciples to minister in His name, He told them, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give!” (Matthew 10:8) MEV.

There isn’t any indication the disciples thought that healing should cease. Instead, they continued ministering healing after Jesus had left the earth. “Many signs and wonders were performed among the people by the hands of the apostles…so that they even brought the sick out into the streets and placed them on beds and mats that at least the shadow of peter passing by might touch some of them. Crowds also came out of the cities…bringing the sick and those who were afflicted by evil spirits, and they were healed.” (Acts 5:12-16) MEV.

Deception of Satan affected preachers

The healing power of the gospel is as available today as it was in the early Church! It’s the preachers down through the ages allowed Satan to come into their lives and they began water down the scriptures because of the lack of faith. Healing ceased because they lost their faith and the power they were given when they received the Holy Spirit. Without that power they started preaching that healing had ceased and wasn’t for today.

However, healing is still an essential part of the Great Commission listed among the signs that shall follow them who believe. He said to them, “Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved. But he who does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” (Mark 16:15-18) MEV.

Now if preachers would only believe the Word of God for what it says instead of putting their own interpretation to the Word and preventing the Holy Spirit from working then healing would return once again.
